Soya Keema

Cheap, high protein, and honestly hard to tell from the real thing on a roti.

30 min Some work Vegetarian

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 3 tbsp oil

Method

  1. Soak the granules in hot salted water 10 minutes, then squeeze them completely dry. Squeeze harder than you think.
  2. Brown the onions in oil, add ginger-garlic paste.
  3. Tomatoes, chilli powder, salt — cook down till thick.
  4. Add soya and peas, fry on medium 8 minutes so it gets slightly crisp.

Questions people ask about Soya Keema

How long does Soya Keema take?

About 30 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is a bit of work. Most of that is active, so read the method through before you start rather than chopping as you go.

What can I use instead of onion in Soya Keema?

Use shallots, which are sweeter, or leeks for a milder result. Neither browns quite as deeply.

Can I make Soya Keema ahead of time?

Yes, and it is better for it. Cool it fully, refrigerate for up to three days, and reheat gently with a splash of water. The flavours settle overnight.

Is Soya Keema vegetarian?

Yes, and as written it is vegan too. Check your specific brands if that matters to you.

What do you serve with Soya Keema?

Pav or roti. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
