Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Chewy, spiced, and they feel slightly less like a dessert.

40 min Easy Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup maida
  • 150g soft butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg or 1/4 cup curd
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Method

  1. Soak the raisins in hot water for 10 minutes, then drain and dry. Dry raisins pull moisture out of the cookie and go hard.
  2. Cream butter and brown sugar, then egg and vanilla.
  3. Fold in flour, soda, cinnamon, then oats and raisins.
  4. Chill 20 minutes.
  5. Balls flattened slightly on a lined tray. 180°C for 11-13 minutes.
  6. Edges golden, middles soft. They set as they cool.

Questions people ask about Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

How long does Oatmeal Raisin Cookies take?

About 40 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. Most of that is active, so read the method through before you start rather than chopping as you go.

What can I use instead of maida in Oatmeal Raisin Cookies?

Use plain atta for a denser, nuttier result, or a 50/50 mix if you want to keep some lift.

Can I make Oatmeal Raisin Cookies ahead of time?

Yes, and it is better for it. Cool it fully, refrigerate for up to three days, and reheat gently with a splash of water. The flavours settle overnight.

Is Oatmeal Raisin Cookies vegetarian?

Yes, it is vegetarian. It is not vegan as written because it contains dairy; swap the dairy for a plant alternative and the rest of the method is unchanged.

Do I need an oven for Oatmeal Raisin Cookies?

Yes, this one needs an oven. If you do not have one, look at the no-oven filter on the baking page: eleven of the bakes here are built for a cooker, a pan or the fridge.

What do you serve with Oatmeal Raisin Cookies?

On its own, warm, with tea or coffee. Baking is chemistry, so scale it by weight rather than by eye: double every quantity, use a tin with roughly double the area, and expect to add ten minutes or so. Judge it by the skewer, not the clock.
