Questions people ask about Tomato Relish

How long does Tomato Relish take?

About 45 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is a bit of work. Most of that is active, so read the method through before you start rather than chopping as you go.

What can I use instead of tomato in Tomato Relish?

Use canned chopped tomatoes, roughly 1 can per 4 fresh. Add a pinch of sugar to offset the acidity.

Can I make Tomato Relish ahead of time?

Yes, and it is better for it. Cool it fully, refrigerate for up to three days, and reheat gently with a splash of water. The flavours settle overnight.

Is Tomato Relish vegetarian?

Yes, it is vegetarian. It is not vegan as written because it contains dairy; swap the dairy for a plant alternative and the rest of the method is unchanged.

How long does home-made tomato relish keep?

A fresh chutney is a few days in the fridge; a cooked, sugared one keeps for months in a sterilised jar. Use a dry spoon every time — water is what turns it.
