Mint Syrup

Sugar syrup steeped with mint. Goes in drinks, over fruit, into sherbet.

15 min Easy Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • A large bunch of mint leaves, chopped

Method

  1. Boil the sugar and water 3-4 minutes into a thin syrup.
  2. Off the heat, then the mint. Adding mint to boiling syrup kills the colour.
  3. Cover and leave until cold so it takes on the colour and flavour.
  4. Strain into a bottle and refrigerate.

Questions people ask about Mint Syrup

How long does Mint Syrup take?

About 15 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. That is start-to-finish, so it works on a weeknight when you have not planned anything.

Can I make Mint Syrup ahead of time?

You can prepare it a few hours ahead and reheat gently. It keeps two days in the fridge, though it is best on the day.

Is Mint Syrup vegetarian?

Yes, and as written it is vegan too. Check your specific brands if that matters to you.

How long does home-made mint syrup keep?

Depends what it is: pastes and stocks keep a few days refrigerated or months frozen in portions; dry mixes keep for months in a sealed jar.
