30 min Some work Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 250g cabbage, parboiled
  • 250g cauliflower florets, boiled
  • 250g carrots, diced and boiled
  • 3 potatoes, boiled and sliced
  • 1 lettuce, shredded
  • 3 cucumbers, seeded and sliced
  • 200g tofu, fried and sliced
  • 1 cup peanut sauce
  • 5 shallots, fried crisp

Method

  1. Boil each vegetable separately so they each stop at the right point, then cool them.
  2. Arrange them in sections in a wide bowl over the lettuce, with the tofu on top.
  3. Peanut sauce spooned over — thin it with warm water if it's stiff.
  4. Crisp shallots scattered last. They're what makes it.

Questions people ask about Gado Gado

How long does Gado Gado take?

About 30 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is a bit of work. Most of that is active, so read the method through before you start rather than chopping as you go.

What can I use instead of tofu in Gado Gado?

Use paneer, cubed the same size. It browns faster, so drop the heat slightly.

Can I make Gado Gado ahead of time?

You can prepare it a few hours ahead and reheat gently. It keeps two days in the fridge, though it is best on the day.

Is Gado Gado vegetarian?

Yes, and as written it is vegan too. Check your specific brands if that matters to you.
