Ingredients

  • 4 cups cold cooked rice

  • 200g chicken or prawns (optional)

  4. Protein if using, then cold rice. Press and toss for 4 minutes.

  6. Fried egg on each portion, cucumber and tomato on the side, fried shallots over the top.

Questions people ask about Nasi Goreng

How long does Nasi Goreng take?

About 22 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is a bit of work. Most of that is active, so read the method through before you start rather than chopping as you go.

What is the one thing to get right in Nasi Goreng?

Blend the garlic, shallots and chillies into a paste. This spice paste is what makes it nasi goreng and not fried rice.

What can I use instead of rice in Nasi Goreng?

Use any long-grain rice. Basmati needs less water than most, so check the packet before following the ratio here.

Can I make Nasi Goreng ahead of time?

Yes, and it is better for it. Cool it fully, refrigerate for up to three days, and reheat gently with a splash of water. The flavours settle overnight.

What do you serve with Nasi Goreng?

Fried egg on each portion, cucumber and tomato on the side, fried shallots over the top. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
