Date Chutney

Sweet, sour and hot at once. The chutney that makes chaat work.

20 min Easy Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates, chopped and pitted
  • 50g raisins
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Salt

Method

  1. Everything into a pan together.
  2. Simmer on low, stirring now and then, until it thickens and the dates collapse.
  3. Cool before serving — it thickens further as it cools, so stop while it still looks slightly loose.
  4. Blend it if you want it smooth.

Questions people ask about Date Chutney

How long does Date Chutney take?

About 20 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. That is start-to-finish, so it works on a weeknight when you have not planned anything.

Can I make Date Chutney ahead of time?

You can prepare it a few hours ahead and reheat gently. It keeps two days in the fridge, though it is best on the day.

Is Date Chutney vegetarian?

Yes, and as written it is vegan too. Check your specific brands if that matters to you.

How long does home-made date chutney keep?

A fresh chutney is a few days in the fridge; a cooked, sugared one keeps for months in a sterilised jar. Use a dry spoon every time — water is what turns it.
