Tuna Salad Sandwich

A can, ten minutes, no stove. The emergency dinner that doesn't feel like one.

10 min Easy Non-vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 2 cans tuna, drained
  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise or thick curd
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 stick celery or 1/2 cucumber, diced
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 lemon
  • Black pepper
  • 8 slices bread
  • Lettuce

Method

  1. Drain the tuna properly, pressing the lid down hard. Wet tuna makes soggy bread.
  2. Flake it with a fork, then mix with mayo, onion, celery, mustard, lemon, salt and lots of pepper.
  3. Taste — it needs more lemon and pepper than feels right.
  4. Butter the bread edge to edge.
  5. Tuna, then lettuce for crunch.
  6. Press, cut diagonally. Toast it if you want it hot.

Questions people ask about Tuna Salad Sandwich

How long does Tuna Salad Sandwich take?

About 10 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. That is start-to-finish, so it works on a weeknight when you have not planned anything.

What can I use instead of fish in Tuna Salad Sandwich?

Use any firm white fish, or paneer for a vegetarian version. Avoid delicate fish in anything that needs stirring.

Can I make Tuna Salad Sandwich ahead of time?

You can prepare it a few hours ahead and reheat gently. It keeps two days in the fridge, though it is best on the day.

Can I make Tuna Salad Sandwich vegetarian?

Yes. Replace the fish with king oyster mushrooms torn into chunks, or firm tofu pressed dry. Both want a hard sear first, and both go in at the very end, because neither needs more than a couple of minutes.

What do you serve with Tuna Salad Sandwich?

Toast it if you want it hot. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
