Grilled Prawns

Fifteen minutes, six ingredients, and the marinade does everything.

20 min Easy Non-vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 500g large prawns, shell on if possible
  • 8 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 60g butter, melted
  • 2 lemons
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • Parsley or coriander
  • Salt, black pepper

Method

  1. Butterfly the prawns along the back — more surface for the marinade and they cook evenly.
  2. Marinade: melted butter, crushed garlic, paprika, chilli flakes, lemon, salt, pepper. 15 minutes only. Lemon left longer starts cooking the flesh.
  3. Get the pan or grill screaming hot.
  4. 2 minutes on the first side, 1 on the second. When they curl into a C they're done; a full O means overcooked.
  5. Spoon the remaining marinade over in the last 30 seconds.
  6. Lemon and herbs. Bread to mop the pan.

Questions people ask about Grilled Prawns

How long does Grilled Prawns take?

About 20 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. That is start-to-finish, so it works on a weeknight when you have not planned anything.

What can I use instead of prawns in Grilled Prawns?

Use chicken cut small, cooked 4 minutes longer, or mushrooms seared hard first.

Can I make Grilled Prawns ahead of time?

You can prepare it a few hours ahead and reheat gently. It keeps two days in the fridge, though it is best on the day.

Can I make Grilled Prawns vegetarian?

Yes. Replace the prawns with king oyster mushrooms torn into chunks, or firm tofu pressed dry. Both want a hard sear first, and both go in at the very end, because neither needs more than a couple of minutes.

What do you serve with Grilled Prawns?

Bread to mop the pan. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
