Tawa Pizza

No oven, no yeast, fifteen minutes on a pan.

20 min Easy Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 4 pita, naan or ready pizza bases
  • 1 cup pizza sauce or ketchup + oregano
  • 2 cups grated cheese
  • 1 capsicum, 1 onion, sliced
  • Sweet corn, olives, whatever's around
  • Chilli flakes, oregano

Method

  1. Spread sauce on the base, leaving a border.
  2. Half the cheese, then toppings, then the rest of the cheese on top — it glues everything down.
  3. Hot tawa on LOW, base on, cover with a lid.
  4. 6-8 minutes. The lid traps heat and melts the cheese like an oven would.
  5. Chilli flakes and oregano. Cut and eat immediately.

Questions people ask about Tawa Pizza

How long does Tawa Pizza take?

About 20 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. That is start-to-finish, so it works on a weeknight when you have not planned anything.

What can I use instead of bread in Tawa Pizza?

Use any loaf that is a day old. Fresh bread turns to paste in most of these.

Can I make Tawa Pizza ahead of time?

You can prepare it a few hours ahead and reheat gently. It keeps two days in the fridge, though it is best on the day.

Is Tawa Pizza vegetarian?

Yes, it is vegetarian. It is not vegan as written because it contains dairy; swap the dairy for a plant alternative and the rest of the method is unchanged.

What do you serve with Tawa Pizza?

A green salad and bread. Nothing else needed. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
