  • 2 cups puttu podi (coarse rice flour)
  • 1 cup grated coconut

  4. Roast the 1/2 cup coconut till dark brown, then blend with a little water.
  5. Fry onions and curry leaves, add powders, then the roasted coconut paste and the chana with its water.
  6. Simmer 15 minutes till thick. Push the puttu out and eat it with the curry and a banana.

Questions people ask about Puttu + Kadala Curry

How long does Puttu + Kadala Curry take?

About 45 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is a bit of work. Most of that is active, so read the method through before you start rather than chopping as you go.

What can I use instead of rice in Puttu + Kadala Curry?

Use any long-grain rice. Basmati needs less water than most, so check the packet before following the ratio here.

Can I make Puttu + Kadala Curry ahead of time?

You can prepare it a few hours ahead and reheat gently. It keeps two days in the fridge, though it is best on the day.

Is Puttu + Kadala Curry vegetarian?

Yes, and as written it is vegan too. Check your specific brands if that matters to you.

Do I need a pressure cooker for Puttu + Kadala Curry?

A cooker is faster but not essential. In an open pot, expect roughly three times the cooking time and keep an eye on the water level, topping up with hot water rather than cold.

What do you serve with Puttu + Kadala Curry?

Steamed rice with a spoon of ghee, and a papad if you have one. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
