12 min Easy Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bread
  • 3 potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp chaat masala
  • Coriander
  • Butter
  • Cheese (optional)

  1. Mix the mashed potato with onion, chillies, turmeric, chaat masala, coriander and salt. Keep it thick and spreadable.
  2. Butter one side of each slice.
  3. Spread the potato thickly on the unbuttered side, right to the edges — the edges are what crisp.
  4. Tawa on medium, buttered side down. Cover with a lid.
  5. 4 minutes till the base is golden, then flip so the potato side gets a crust too.
  6. Ketchup and chai.

Questions people ask about Masala Aloo Toast

How long does Masala Aloo Toast take?

About 12 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. That is start-to-finish, so it works on a weeknight when you have not planned anything.

What can I use instead of bread in Masala Aloo Toast?

Use any loaf that is a day old. Fresh bread turns to paste in most of these.

Can I make Masala Aloo Toast ahead of time?

Yes, and it is better for it. Cool it fully, refrigerate for up to three days, and reheat gently with a splash of water. The flavours settle overnight.

Is Masala Aloo Toast vegetarian?

Yes, it is vegetarian. It is not vegan as written because it contains dairy; swap the dairy for a plant alternative and the rest of the method is unchanged.

What do you serve with Masala Aloo Toast?

Roti or plain rice, with something sharp on the side: curd, pickle or sliced onion. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
