Double Decker Rounds

Bread cut into circles, cream cheese and coconut chutney between. Fussy, and it always disappears.

20 min Easy Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf bread
  • Butter
  • Cream cheese
  • Coconut mint chutney
  • Ketchup

Method

  1. Cut circles out of the slices with a glass or cutter. Keep the offcuts for breadcrumbs.
  2. Butter every circle.
  3. Cream cheese between the first two, chutney on top of that, and a third buttered circle to close.
  4. A dot of ketchup on each. Any two fillings work — this is a shape, not a recipe.

Questions people ask about Double Decker Rounds

How long does Double Decker Rounds take?

About 20 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. That is start-to-finish, so it works on a weeknight when you have not planned anything.

What can I use instead of bread in Double Decker Rounds?

Use any loaf that is a day old. Fresh bread turns to paste in most of these.

Can I make Double Decker Rounds ahead of time?

You can prepare it a few hours ahead and reheat gently. It keeps two days in the fridge, though it is best on the day.

Is Double Decker Rounds vegetarian?

Yes, it is vegetarian. It is not vegan as written because it contains dairy; swap the dairy for a plant alternative and the rest of the method is unchanged.

What do you serve with Double Decker Rounds?

Roti or plain rice, with something sharp on the side: curd, pickle or sliced onion. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
