Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

The icing sugar cracks open in the oven and makes the pattern for you.

50 min Some work Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups maida
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1.25 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup icing sugar to roll

Method

  1. Whisk cocoa, sugar and oil together, then the eggs and vanilla.
  2. Fold in flour and baking powder. The dough will be very sticky — that's correct.
  3. Chill at least 3 hours. Unchilled dough is impossible to roll and the crinkles won't form.
  4. Roll balls in icing sugar, coating them thickly. Thin coating means no cracks.
  5. 180°C for 10-12 minutes.
  6. They come out puffed and soft. Cool on the tray.

Is Chocolate Crinkle Cookies vegetarian?

Yes, and as written it is vegan too. Check your specific brands if that matters to you.

What do you serve with Chocolate Crinkle Cookies?

On its own, warm, with tea or coffee. Baking is chemistry, so scale it by weight rather than by eye: double every quantity, use a tin with roughly double the area, and expect to add ten minutes or so. Judge it by the skewer, not the clock.
