Bisi Bele Bath

Rice, dal and vegetables in one pot. A full meal that needs one dish washed.

45 min Some work Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup toor dal
  • 2 cups mixed vegetables
  • Small ball tamarind, soaked
  • 3 tbsp sambar powder
  • 1 tsp jaggery
  • 1/4 cup peanuts
  • 15 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 4 tbsp ghee

Method

  1. Pressure cook rice and dal together with turmeric and 5 cups water — you want it soft and mushy, not separate grains.
  2. Boil the vegetables with tamarind water, sambar powder, jaggery and salt for 10 minutes.
  3. Combine with the rice-dal, add hot water until it's loose and pourable. It thickens as it sits.
  4. Simmer 5 minutes, stirring so it doesn't catch.
  5. Tadka: ghee, mustard seeds, curry leaves, peanuts. Pour over. Serve with more ghee.

Questions people ask about Bisi Bele Bath

How long does Bisi Bele Bath take?

About 45 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is a bit of work. Most of that is active, so read the method through before you start rather than chopping as you go.

What can I use instead of rice in Bisi Bele Bath?

Use any long-grain rice. Basmati needs less water than most, so check the packet before following the ratio here.

Can I make Bisi Bele Bath ahead of time?

Yes, and it is better for it. Cool it fully, refrigerate for up to three days, and reheat gently with a splash of water. The flavours settle overnight.

Is Bisi Bele Bath vegetarian?

Yes, it is vegetarian. It is not vegan as written because it contains dairy; swap the dairy for a plant alternative and the rest of the method is unchanged.

Do I need a pressure cooker for Bisi Bele Bath?

A cooker is faster but not essential. In an open pot, expect roughly three times the cooking time and keep an eye on the water level, topping up with hot water rather than cold.

What do you serve with Bisi Bele Bath?

Serve with more ghee. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
