Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 cup butter or shortening, cold
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Method

  1. Sift the flour, soda and baking powder. Rub in the cold butter a little at a time.
  2. Buttermilk and salt in, and knead as little as you can get away with. Overworking makes them tough.

  4. Two inches apart on a greased tray. 200°C for 15 minutes until golden.
  5. Split and fill with cream whipped with icing sugar and vanilla.
