Baked Beans on Toast

Eight minutes. Not glamorous, genuinely satisfying, and always possible.

10 min Easy Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 1 can baked beans (or rajma + 3 tbsp ketchup)
  • 4 slices bread
  • Butter
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • Grated cheese
  • Black pepper

Method

  1. Heat the beans in a pan with chilli flakes and pepper. Let them reduce slightly, 4 minutes.
  2. Toast the bread properly — dark, not pale. It has to hold up.
  3. Butter the toast while it's hot.
  4. Beans on top, cheese over that so it melts.
  5. A fried egg on top turns this into a proper dinner.

Questions people ask about Baked Beans on Toast

How long does Baked Beans on Toast take?

About 10 minutes from starting to sitting down, and it is straightforward. That is start-to-finish, so it works on a weeknight when you have not planned anything.

What can I use instead of bread in Baked Beans on Toast?

Use any loaf that is a day old. Fresh bread turns to paste in most of these.

Can I make Baked Beans on Toast ahead of time?

Not really. This one relies on being crisp, and crisp does not survive the fridge. Prepare the components ahead if you like, but cook it just before eating.

Is Baked Beans on Toast vegetarian?

Yes, it is vegetarian. It is not vegan as written because it contains dairy; swap the dairy for a plant alternative and the rest of the method is unchanged.

What do you serve with Baked Beans on Toast?

Bread, potatoes or a simple salad. It serves two as written. Double everything to feed four, but use a wider pan so the food still browns rather than steams.
